The idea for Ocean started in the fall of 2017 when a fan suggested on Twitter that a collaboration between Martin Garrix and American singer Khalid would be a great match. Khalid retweeted the message, and Garrix replied simply: “Let’s do it.” The exchange quickly turned into a real project.
In April 2018, Martin Garrix recorded the instrumental part of the track in the studio. Khalid later added his vocals, with the two artists working remotely and exchanging ideas through FaceTime before ever meeting in person. The song reflects Garrix’s melodic side, closer in spirit to tracks like In the Name of Love and Scared to Be Lonely, with a more restrained and emotional production rather than a festival-driven drop. Garrix explained that exploring different musical directions keeps his creative process fresh, while still leaving room for the more energetic EDM records he is also known for.
The official video for Ocean was filmed in a large abandoned building in Toronto, Canada. The production involved around forty crew members who spent nearly a week building the set, using mirrors, plexiglass panels and complex lighting installations to create the visual atmosphere of the clip. The shoot also marked the first time Martin Garrix and Khalid met in person, after having worked on the track remotely.
